Hauser Chocolates History

Hauser Chocolatier was founded in 1983 by master confectioner Ruedi Hauser Sr. and his wife, Lucille, with the intent to produce world-class confections hand made in the USA.

Being Swiss-born, and the Swiss being the world's foremost chocolate lovers, it follows that a love of chocolate and confectionery led Ruedi Hauser, Sr. to apprentice as chef patissier and confiseur in his native Switzerland in 1957. As a young pastry chef on luxury liners' world cruises there was ample opportunity to exercise creativity making fanciful chocolate showpieces and an abundance of rich and ornate pastries and tortes. Upon settling in the United States his love of food joined with his entrepreneurial spirit and resulted in a Swiss style pastry shop in the small New England town of Bethel, CT. By 1978 he turned his attention to the broader spectrum of the food world and operated a full catering service while teaching cooking as a hobby. By popular demand, many of these cooking classes concerned desserts and chocolate.

While food in all it's shapes, flavors and textures continued to hold great interest it's the love of chocolate and the artistry of confectionery that led the Hausers to establish Hauser Chocolatier in 1983. From its inception to the present day, Hauser Chocolatier has been guided by one principle: using original recipes based on Chef Ruedi's Swiss heritage and training to make the world's most distinctive truffles using specially selected blends of premium chocolates and the freshest ingredients. Ruedi's chocolate expertise was featured in "Bon Appetit" Magazine's 1983 November issue, and in 1987 he published an article on chocolate cakes and pastries in "Bon Appetit". In 1990 growth led to the opening of a larger facility in Westerly, RI where all production takes place today. Son Rudi Hauser, Jr., also a certified master chocolatier, joined the company in 1985. It is the vision and enthusiasm of this second generation that created a presence on the world wide web. Rudi Jr. is now President of Hauser Chocolatier.

From the beginning, Hauser Chocolatier has been creating exceptional, hand-finished, fresh cream truffles and other distinctive gourmet chocolate delights for the connoisseur. Made with fresh cream, diary butter and a blend of select, premium chocolate, each truffle flavor is uniquely conceived, reflecting 60 years and two generations of combined fine chocolate-making experience and original recipes developed by master confectioner Ruedi C. Hauser, Sr.

Hauser Chocolatier passes the Presidency to a new generation. We are happy to announce that Rudi Hauser Jr. has taken over the duties of President (of Hauser Foods Inc. or Hauser Chocolatier). Active in the company since its' inception during his college years, Rudi Jr. has a wealth of knowledge, not only of chocolate but also of modern technology and the internet. His keen interest in all phases of the business of chocolate and his vision for the future of Hauser Chocolatier will ensure our continued growth and success. Founder and former president, Ruedi Sr. is now able to devote his full time and expertise to his primary interest, which is designing and producing the world class chocolates for which he is known, as Vice president of Research & Development.

Ruedi Hauser Sr. and Rudi Hauser Jr. become first father & son team to receive Emeritus awards at the Retail Confectioners International convention in Hershey PA., June, 2003. Chef Ruedi Sr. received the Master Confectioner award and Rudi Jr. received the Master Chocolatier award. The awards are the beginning of a program for certification of members of the candy industry. Spearheaded by RCI (Retail Confectioners International) the certification program outlines a series of credentials and credits necessary to recognize the proficiency of members of the candy industry as candy-makers, chocolatiers, or confectioners which includes both candy-makers and chocolatiers.
